Featued video:"Disconection Notice" by Pupil

Defferent Words By:Pupil

Featured Band: Pupil

Pupil is a Filipino rock band composed of Ely Buendia on frontman duties and guitars, Yan Yuzon on lead guitar, Dok Sergio on bass and Wendell Garcia on drums.

History

Pupil is formed by Dok Sergio from the bands The Teeth and Daydream Cycle joined The Mongols' line-up during the fourth quarter of 2004, making it a five-man band. The Mongols' bassist Yan Yuzon moved to third guitar duties while Dok Sergio handled bass. The transitional five-man line-up was witnessed in The Mongols’ last single and music video entitled “Heroine”. In May 2005, guitarist, Jerome Velasco, a.k.a J. Astro, left to pursue a career in producing and recording studio engineering. The group's last gig under the name "The Mongols" was on July 7, 2005.
Velasco’s departure shook things up for the group as they were trapped into the decision of whether to stay as a band or not. As they decided to continue and as they progressed, the band noticed that they were producing a different sound without Velasco on the lead guitar and decided to form a "new" band. “We got a better bass player and dumber guitarist,” jokes guitarist Yan Yuzon, who left bass playing duties to Dok Sergio to take Velasco’s place. Upon the determination of forming a “new” band, the group’s first move was to change their name.[1]
Frontman Ely Buendia chanced upon the name "Pupil" while browsing a medical book. The band wanted a classic name for a rock band. Before using Pupil, they tried several other names, such as Villain, Lords of Nasdaq, The Gets, Trochlean, Traitors, and Tyrel Corp. They chose the name Pupil because Buendia liked the fact that it is the part of the eye where light enters. Guitarist Yan Yuzon likes its double meaning, as well as the “eternal learning” connotations of the name. Pupil's launch gig was on July 13, 2005 at the UP Bahay ng Alumni.[2]

[edit] Resurgence

Pupil had a hard time searching for a record label. They submitted their demo to several labels, but no one was more enthusiastic about the new material than the newly-merged Sony BMG. Incidentally, Ely left BMG Pilipinas in 2002 in the wake of his falling out with the Eraserheads. However, BMG accepted Buendia again like a "prodigal son" as he himself describes it in their debut album's insert.
The band admits that there is a distinct challenge for them, coming out of their past bands (Eraserheads and The Teeth).[3] The challenge is particularly pronounced on frontman, Ely Buendia, since older fans tend to compare him and his new band with the huge popularity of The Eraserheads before. In an interview by Y. Losorata he says, "I just want my fans and hopefully, my fans to be, to appreciate my music. I’m lucky to still have my career in music as a job and as part of Pupil wala akong (I don't have) delusions to become as big as my previous band was." In fact, the band itself describes their music as actually "one foot in the past, one foot in the present and both eyes dead set at the future." According to Buendia, it's not being there but getting there that's exciting for him, no matter how many times he tries to get there.[4] He later added in a different interview, "Let’s just say that the Eraserheads is about escaping reality and Pupil is about accepting reality."

Reception and Success

Local radio stations' initial reception of Pupil's music, though, was relatively limited (with the exception of NU 107) due to the band's genre and musical style. While the band's carrier single, "Nasaan Ka?" was played often and achieved quite a popularity among listeners, other singles released from their album encountered more hurdles. The song "Nasaan Ka?" was used as main theme and "story" (based on lyrics) for the first episode of the second season of Your Song. Frontman Ely Buendia says, "Some pop radio stations are still making up their minds on 'Dianetic' which I personally don’t understand since it’s really just one of those straightforward love songs medyo on the noisy side nga lang (just a little bit on the noisy side)." "Then again, minsan talaga hindi mo maintindihan ang ibang radio stations (sometimes you cannot understand some radio stations). It’s not as if they don’t play songs by foreign artists like Nirvana with music heavier on distorted electric guitar than ours. Pero okay lang (But that's okay), that’s the reality of things." He speculates that xenocentrism has something to do about the double standard these radio stations go by. Consequently, they were forced to release an acoustic version of their second single, "Dianetic". The acoustic version of "Nasaan Ka?" was then used as a Bonus Track for Sony BMG's CD Sampler 2006 Volume 3.
However, the band had relatively early success as evidenced by advertising projects that they were involved with and local awards that they have won. They were featured as the Rising Star for the month of May, 2006 in MTV Philippines. In the 19th Awit Awards held in Casino Filipino, they won the Award for Best Performance By A New Group Recording Artist/s category [5]. They received another award for their first single, "Nasaan Ka?" at the MTV Pilipinas VMA 2006, bagging the Best Rock Video Award. Then, Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chose them as their promotional models for their product along with Barbie Almalbis, another local artist. They also received endorsement deals from Levi's, Puma, Ray-Ban and Pony footwear.
In November 26, 2006 Pupil won the SOP Music Awards 2006 Breakthrough Recording Artist of The Year Award. "We don't think Pupil should've qualified as 'breakthrough artist' because this actually is our second album after we changed our name from The Mongols", says Ely.
The band also participated in the 2006 MTV Staying Alive Music Summit for HIV/AIDS. Pupil’s fourth single, "Gamu-Gamo", quickly climbed NU 107’s Stairway to Seven's number one spot within the first week of 2007. The band also performed a special 8-minute medley (which included a cover of the Eraserheads hit, "Pare Ko") at the 2nd MYX Music Awards which was held on March 15, 2007 at the AFP Theater, Camp Aguinaldo.[6]

New Drummer and Mainstream

On July 25, 2007, Yan Yuzon announced in Pupil's mailing list that Bogs Jugo, the band's drummer, left the band to pursue other things for his career. Wendell Garcia, formerly of Barbie's Cradle, replaced Jugo. Garcia played his first gig as the new drummer on July 26, 2007 at the Hard Rock Cafe, Makati. The gig also featured new songs from Pupil's second album. The Mongols' Jerome Velasco played synths with the band. He is also the band's producer for their second album.
Since the release of the band’s second album (Wild Life), the band has enjoyed greater mainstream success and better album sales. The band has also toured and performed in other countries such as Singapore, Qatar, Dubai and Canada. Their live performance of "Disconnection Notice" for MTV Philippines was featured in Best of MTV Live 2008. The same year, the band won 7 different awards which include a Promax/BDA and NU107 Artist of The Year.[7]
Pupil was personally chosen by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor as front act in the Manila part of the "Nine Inch Nails: Wave Goodbye" tour, which was held at the Araneta Coliseum on August 5, 2009. The band Nine Inch Nails are set to tour the globe this year for one last time before going on hiatus indefinitely, as 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of their first release. \
This was followed by a film soundtrack, when the band composed and recorded "Ang Panday" for Ang Panday (2009 film). The band released their first book, entitled "Against The Light: A Pupil Tour Diary", it details their recent Summer Tour in the Philippines. It was launched on November 4, 2009 at the Bonifacio High Street. Aside from the guest band Turbo Goth, Lally Buendia (Ely's sister) also guested and performed three songs from her band, Domino. Dok Sergio played bass, Lally on vocals, Ely played keyboard/synths and Paolo Manuel on drums. They joined The Earth Day Concert at the SM Mall of Asia on April 16, 2010 and afterwards, opened for Tears for Fears with Sandwich on May 2, 2010 at the Araneta Coliseum. The band also performed with Amanda Ling as guest artist (formerly of Electrico) on keyboards during the Nine Inch Nails and Tears for Fears events.

History

Up dharma Down is a Manila-based band that has interestingly combined musical boundaries in their songs. Many of their listeners have tried to give their music a tag, but even the four attest to the fact that the only way to understand this nameless genre is to press play. BBC U.K. thru Mark Cole's radio show and Time Magazine Asia have helped push their music internationally. They have played in regional music festivals, received numerous nominations and garnered recognition for their work from award-giving bodies. With the recognizable charm of the band as part of independent label Terno Recordings, their sound has crossed-over to commercial success. They have worked with brands such as Lipton, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Puma.
Their debut album, Fragmented hit #1 and stayed in the charts for weeks from its release in early 2006. The four continue to receive even more approval not only from local critics  but also from the likes of Tim Bowness (No-Man) and Paul Buchanan (The Blue Nile), since the launch of their sophomore effort, Bipolar, in October 2008.
"Bringing together an intense and original combination of styles and influences and blessed with the beguiling voice  of Armi Millare, Up Dharma Down are a hit waiting to happen." - Tim Bowness, No-man

"My favorite group. Beautiful, victorious, elegant, muscular music." - Paul Buchanan, The Blue Nile

Featued video:"Hang Over" by Sugar Free

Featured Band: Sugar Free

Sugarfree's band history is quite simple. In college, Ebe went through a succession of bands.Everything was going mediocre with nothing really breaking out.Ebe was ready to call it quits, when he met Jal and Mitch.Sabi ko sa sarili ko, huling subok ko na.Kung mag-fail to, siguro hindi talaga para sa'kin , Ebe shares, then everything just fell into place .
The three easily penned songs, played in the underground, earned admirers and supporters, became a main stay in production nights such as Admit One in Freedom Bar.
They signed with Viva, but was put on a terrible wait list.Sugarfree, however, managed to record Sa Wakas with their honorary member Rivermaya frontman Rico Blanco. But when Rico had to leave to start work with Rivermaya, Dancel and studio genius Angee Razul carried on the mantle of production. After more than a year, Sugarfree was able to complete the 12 songs that were soon to become Sa Wakas. Then more waiting happened, the tussle between labels came to be, and then finally, the sweet success.Sugarfree sold records, performed countless gigs across the archipelago, and won awards.

Biography:
STILL SMOKIN' The band Wolfgang is back with a metallic blast. "Midway through a blistering set at the Music Musuem, Basti Artadi told the audience, "This is hallowed ground, man! It's good to be back and tang'na, as always, you're such a great audience." "Basti is the vocalist and chief songwriter of Wolfgang, the once and future kings of Philippine new metal...It's a sight to see Artadi standing transfixed before the mic in Jesus pose, arms stretched out with forefingers pointed skyward. The crowd responds in kind, a slightly bent finger arced toward the stage while singing the lyrics to every song the band has ever recorded. "Then there's Artadi's crack cohorts with guitarist Manuel Legarda, bassist Mon Legaspi, and drummer Francis Aquino. Each of them show expert chops that draw out the metal monster from their loud fast numbers. In concert, even their ballads teeter on the brink of controlled mayhem. "Although the band has been absent from the scene for the past six years, it's like they never left. Nobody has challenged their unique place in the Pinoy metal pantheon and their new sound is as ferocious and death-defying as anything from their first release in 1995. "Villains was recorded in three cities. Yet the distance, compressed to milliseconds of interaction via the Internet, has not dimmed the original fire that forged their contemporary brand of heavy metal. "At Music Museum, the band uncorked their best hits laced with songs from the new album. They even treated the raving audience with acoustic performances after a fusillade of ear-bending noise and one country-inflected number which left no doubt as to who still rules the nation's heavy metal roost. "Old warhorses 'Sanctified', 'Atomica' and 'Beast' are brothers-in-arms of the more recent 'John of the Cross' and 'R.P. Deathsquad.' Past favorites like 'Natutulog Kong Mundo' and 'Halik ni Hudas' (both written by Legaspi) are as potent quiet storms as the new 'Kung Gusto Mo Pa' (penned by Artadi.) Wolfgang's latest concerts prove they still pack the firepower to sustain a legendary stay at the top of the Pinoy metal heap. "The Wolves are back in town and they're having the time of their interrupted lives under the limelight." 'Still Smokin' The band Wolfgang is back with a metallic blast Page 38, The Philippine Free Press by Tony M. Maghirang Photo in The Free Press : Captioned, "Pagan Ritual", by Timothy Christian Pe. Photo with this note by D'ye Sison. +++++ GOOD GUYS DON'T ALWAYS WEAR WHITE "It's been six years since the mighty roar of Filipino heavy metal legends WOLFGANG has been heard, and they're ready to bring back the thunder and lightning to the local music scene. And audiences are roaring back in approval, especially with the band's latest masterpiece VILLAINS. They've still got it -- the know-how to scare the bejesus out of audiences with their devilishly fun brand of heavy metal... and the ability to get their legions of fans to bang their heads..." PULP MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2009 +++++++ CRY HAVOC.... THE SONS OF ANARCHY ARE BACK. Yes, WOLFGANG has returned. Crank up the volume, let the headbangers' ball begin, for it is sweet indeed to hear the wolves once again pounding on the door. And what better way to celebrate their homecoming than with the sixth and newest LP, VILLAINS, in their discography. We cannot overstate the importance of WOLFGANG to Pinoy heavy metal music. In an industry and scene that has musicians trying to to toe the line, balancing technical artistry, creative originality, stage chops and charisma, WOLFGANG has it all. When they first sent a demo of their two original songs "DARKNESS FELL" and "LEFT ALONE" to local radio stations... requests and critical response flooded in... All of a sudden, the bar of excellence was raised. All of a sudden, it looked like Pinoy heavy metal could cross over to the mainstream. Almost technically flawless, with intense and compelling shows and songs, that alternate between doom and delicacy, WOLFGANG brings an onslaught to local ears that took the cue from heavy metal purveyors Metallica, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, and Pantera, combining inventive riffs with melodic complexities.. but firmly rooted in the blues and original fire of classic rock. WOLFGANG would become rock stars who would accomplish many things and be considered a creative juggernaut that not only crafted songs of aggression and beauty, but could also shred the pants of anyone else on-stage. They were amiable rock stars, yes, led by Artadi's metalhead-of-the-masses magnetism, but they were also revered and looked up to as saints and avatars forged in black nativity. Five studio albums and a number of side projects like Brain Salad (basically Artadi and some Razorback members), WOLFGANG would consolidate a following that was not so much a fan base but a devotional congregation that hailed their albums almost as Bibilical verse and psalm to commit sonic crime by. The WOLFGANG reunions in 2007 proved one thing to the members: they still had the magic. "Once Manuel (Legarda) asked me if I wanted to do a new song for the 'Alive' (reunion concert)," says Artadi, "and once I heard the music, all the heaviness I felt regarding music vanished and it became fun again. All this was magnified after the concert as well." WOLFGANG played (the freshly written) RP DEATHSQUAD, an all new song they had written by passing tracks via the internet -- a technique that was used heavily in the completion of the new album, VILLAINS. ---KARL R. DE MESA FUDGE MAGAZINE, DEC 2008 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When it comes to playing loud, hard and fast, few bands have been able to match the sheer ferocity and onstage charisma of WOLFGANG.... In the 1990's, a bunch of dudes with waist-length hair from La Salle, classic rock and thrash metal fans all, decided to form themselves into a band. They started hanging out with friends who had begun to establish themselves as a classic rock-oriented band called Razorback, who dubbed them the Wolfpack, which later evolved into WOLFGANG. After a few months of playing covers, WOLFGANG released their eponymous debut album. Original songs such as "Darkness Fell", "Halik ni Hudas" and "Natutulog Kong Mundo", whose brooding lyrics were mostly penned by frontman Artadi and propelled by machine-gun riffs by Legarda, became instant mosh pit classics. The band also walked off with most of the major music awards of the day. The WOLFGANG cult grew exponentially when they were snapped up by a major label. Their second album "Semenelin" was released internationally in both the United States and Japan, their label believing that WOLFGANG was the Filipino band most likely to break overseas. Their succeeding releases "Wurm" and "Serve in Silence" cemented their fanbase. They continued to reap critical praise and music awards with each release. They released a 'valedictory', the double CD "Black Mantra", with nearly all the members leaving for abroad soon after. Strangely enough, it was as if they never left. Thanks largely to the internet, they managed to stay in touch with their fanbase. Their 2007 reunion gig with Razorback proved to be a watershed, demonstrating that WOLFGANG's audience is still here, impetus enough for the release of their sixth studio album, after a 6-year hiatus, entitled "Villains." -- ERIC CARUNCHO, SUNDAY INQUIRER MAGAZINE December 7, 2008

Metallica Considering Massive Scale Show and Tour With Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax

09/24/2010
.
Metallica are just wrapping up their epic world tour behind "Death Magnetic" but Lars is already looking at ahead at what they should do next. Gibson reports: Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has confirmed what the band's co-manager Peter Mensch hinted at back in March, that the band has been circling the idea of putting on a massive show on par with Pink Floyd's The Wall production. The show could potentially be so massive that it might be limited to just 10 dates.Ulrich told New Zealand radio station The Rock FM, "We have been kicking some ideas around about doing some stuff that – how shall I say it – is pretty theatrical. We might incorporate a lot of different ideas instead of it being one particular thing. It would be a multitude of theatrical elements, maybe as an idea for a one-off tour or something."
Ulrich also confirmed that more "Big Four" (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth) shows, including tours of both Europe and North America, could take place in the next year or two. "The vibe on this thing is so big, we'd be stupid to ignore it," he recently told Classic Rock magazine. "I would champion trying to do [the "Big Four" tour] in 2011 or 2012, obviously in England and the United States. It's just a matter of logistics." -

Trivia

In 2000 the band released its first single, Gusto Ko Ng Baboy, telling of a young man's fascination with pigs since childhood. As the song progresses, it becomes a political tirade against corruption in society.
In 2004 Radioactive Sago Project released its only single from Urban Gulaman, Astro, depicting a person's addiction to cigarette smoking. The song was also used in the Pinoy/Blonde soundtrack the following year.
In 2004 Radioactive Sago Project released one of their songs in their album Urban Gulaman called "Alaala ni Batman" ("Memories of Batman") it tells the story about a man's idolization of Batman since his childhood. As the song progresses it finally talks about the stupidity of people, actors and politics that continue to lower the country's economy through their corrupt ways. In the end of the song, Batman commits suicide by going on top of the Ayala building and jumps down. Once Batman jumped, that's when the singer remembers that he couldn't fly.
In 2005 Radioactive Sago Project received three nominations at the MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards: Favorite Group, Best Video, and Best Director (R.A. Rivera). They won the Best Video, and Best Director (R.A. Rivera) Category.

New Led Zeppelin Songs Written- Stone Temple Pilots Tour Hold- My Chemical Weezer- Zuton Guilty- Battle for INXS- Underoath- W.A.S.P. Disown F**k Like A Beast- more

The Day in Rock Digest for 9/23/10: Jason Bonham says that the never fully off the ground regrouping of Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant did produce some new music: "I was in a band for a year after the O2 reunion, with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones writing material," Bonham tells Nightwatcher. "It didn't come out, but that was a very good time in my life, just jamming with them and coming up with material. Even though nothing came out, it felt like a band." Read the full interview here.

Ely Buendia

Eleandre Basiño Buendia, popularly known as Ely Buendia, and also once adopting the stage name, Jesus "Dizzy" Ventura, (born November 2, 1970) is a Filipino writer and musician who gained fame as guitarist, songwriter, and lead vocalist in the popular Pinoy rock band The Eraserheads. His compositions gained success and critical acclaim, and are now considered classics. Widely regarded as one of most respected music icons in the country, he currently performs as guitarist and lead vocalist for Pupil.

The Eraserheads

In December 1989, Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro and Buddy Zabala formed the Eraserheads in their collegiate school, the University of the Philippines, Diliman, where Buendia was a Film major at the College of Mass Communications (he started his first year of college in 1987). The band found that they weren't good at covering other people's hits, so they concentrated on writing their own material instead. "After all, if we committed a mistake no one would recognize it since they don't know the song, right?," Buendia explained[citation needed]. Performing their original songs live soon earned them a cult following in the University, which gradually spread outside the campus. One of the songs, a pop song entitled, Pare Ko, which Buendia wrote, became very popular, partly because of the lyrics which included a few swear words.
The Eraserheads eventually signed a three-year deal with BMG Pilipinas. Their debut album, "UltraElectroMagneticPop!" featured no less than Pare Ko and a host of other novelty pieces that had people listening and discovering more about the quartet. The album also brought the underground college rock scene into public awareness. 1993 saw the emergence of "Eraserheadsmania" because of successive hit singles, sold-out concerts and thousands of fans.
Buendia continued to write songs for the band, many of which became hit singles and classics. The Eraserheads' lasted for ten years before finally breaking up with Buendia and Adoro's departure. During those 10 years, the band produced eight studio albums along with other EPs and singles. Their gigs took them out of the country, with tours in the U.S. and other countries. One album, "Aloha Milkyway, was released in the Asian region. The Eraserheads were also the first ever Filipino artists to receive the "Moon Man" trophy for winning the 1997 MTV Asia Viewer's Choice Award for the video of their song, "Ang Huling El Bimbo." This hit was also written by Buendia, like many others that the band produced.
The Eraserheads had one of the most influential runs in OPM history.[citation needed]. Their prolific contributions to the OPM repertoire backed by remarkable sales led their record company, Sony-BMG to dub them "The Beatles of the Philippines"[citation needed]. Buendia had correspondingly been dubbed the John Lennon of OPM[citation needed]. Ely remarked, however, that he does not relish being a "John Lennon of OPM" as he craves for his own identity and to be known as "Ely Buendia of OPM."
The Eraserheads went onstage for their reunion concert on August 30, 2008 at the Fort Open Field, Taguig City, which was cut short unexpectedly. The continuation of the concert was held at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds on March 7, 2009.

[edit] Leaving the Eraserheads

After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed that Buendia had left the band in mid-March 2002 for "reasons unknown". However, in subsequent interviews, Buendia pointed to business matters as the cause of the band's break-up[1].
In an interview, Marasigan said he was eating in SM Megamall, a local shopping mall, when he heard of the news (how he heard of it, was not clear). He said he was "semi-surprised" and wondered if Zabala already knew about it[2]. Adoro told of the story now famous among Eraserheads fans about Buendia's cryptic text message. He said Buendia stated in the text message that it's already time to graduate. Adoro quipped in the same interview that Buendia being the first to graduate was natural, since he was in batch '87 in their school (UP, Diliman), while they were in Batch '88.[2]
Zabala confesses in an interview that disbanding had not been that far away from the members' minds. He said that there were so many occasions where they could have disbanded but they did not[3]. Adoro expressed the belief of some people that the band was getting too old and that it was "selfish" for the band to continue, likely referring to comments about how it's time for other bands besides the Eraserheads to shine[3]. The band made it clear, though, that Buendia's departure from the band wasn't in any way violent and there was no shouting (sigawan) or any confrontation[3].
Without giving up, the three remaining original Eraserheads decided to continue on. Within just a few weeks, the "new" Eheads debuted at Hard Rock Cafe in Makati City on April 19 featuring a female singer-guitarist, Kris Gorra-Dancel from the band, Fatal Posporos. However after a few months, Adoro also quit the band. The remaining members of the Eraserheads added Diego Mapa and Ebe Dancel to their lineup and renamed their band, "Cambio"

[edit] The Mongols

After Ely left the Eraserheads, he would invite musicians and jam together. He had no definite line-up at that time, "I have like 10 members in the band right now, I have 2 drummers, 2 bass players..." according to Ely in an interview with Martin Nievera. This jamming together with friends would eventually evolve to The Mongols. It was composed of guitarist J. Astro (also known as Jerome Velasco) (of The Teeth), bassist Yan Yuzon, drummer Bogs "Boga Man" Jugo (of the indie pop band Daydream Cycle), and Buendia on guitars and vocals, under the stage name Jesus "Dizzy" Ventura. The band was managed by Day Cabuhat, one of Eraserheads' former managers. According to one of the Eraserhead's event producers, Ely's "Jesus" stage name was from an inside joke during the Eraserhead's USA Tour. Ely and Marcus bought replica sheriff badges at the Universal Studios Hollywood and Ely got a badge with the name "Jesus" while Marcus' was "Cesar". Since then, Ely was called "Hesus" pronounced in Latin American accent.
The Mongols released a self-produced underground EP in CD-R format with factory-printed sleeves in April 2003, "A Fraction of A Second". It contains five tracks, "Case Logic", "No", "Tomorrowland", "KSP" and "Abstraction of A Second". It was released under "Redrum Records".
After a few months, the Mongols decided to have their self-produced album distributed by Neo Records Inc. under the major label VIVA Records. The result is a thirteen-track album called "Buddha's Pest" (tracks are: "Keeper," "Bulakbol," "Bakit Nga Ba?," "Pony," "Teka Muna," "Candy Flip," "Heroine," "Wig Out," "It's Over," "Irish Spring," "Odd Even," "Your Bushido" plus an untitled instrumental track). It was produced by "The Genghis Klan" under "Criminal Records".

[edit] Pupil

Shortly after The Mongols' guitarist, J. Astro, left the band, the remaining members renamed their group "Pupil." Buendia changed upon the band name while reading a medical book. The band is enjoying more mainstream popularity, in contrast to the Mongols.

[edit] Health

On Sunday, January 7, 2007, Ely Buendia suffered a heart attack or acute myocardial infarction secondary to arterial blockage. It began when Buendia complained about finding it a bit hard to breathe while they were on the way to a gig in Laguna. But he dismissed it as mere heartburn. After some time, Buendia was reportedly in the middle of a song during a gig in Calamba, Laguna when he felt a sudden pain in his chest and left arm. He was rushed to an Intensive Care Unit at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Alabang, Muntinlupa. "It turns out that he'd been having a heart attack for the last five hours." according to ex-eheads manager Jessica Zafra. Doctors performed an angiogram on the frontman and it confirmed the heart attack as two of his arteries were blocked. Buendia's condition was confirmed stable after an emergency angioplasty operation headed by Dr. Benjie Luna during the same night. According to Dok Sergio, “Ely is fine, successful yung surgery last night. (Last night's surgery was a success).”[4]
The second angioplasty operation conducted on Ely Buendia on January 10, 2007 was successful and is secured from having heart attack recurrence. “The operation was a super success. He is totally out of danger and heart attack recurrence is not expected.” according to Buendia’s attending physician and cardiac surgeon, Dr. Wilfred Dee. Diane, Ely's ex-girlfriend, is a capillary-carcinoma survivor who's now free from cancer cells during the past two years.
On behalf of Pupil, Ms. Day Cabuhat and Diane Ventura gave thanks to everyone who called, visited and expressed their concerns to Ely's condition such us fans, writers, editors, media, sponsors, networks, producers, and most especially to local musicians such as Yael Yuzon, Japs Sergio, Francis Magalona, Parokya ni Edgar, Kamikazee, Kiko Machine, Menaya, Rico Blanco, Urbandub, Buddy Zabala, Marcus Adoro and many others.[5]
Buendia was finally released from the Hospital and was allowed to stay at home and rest by his doctors on the night of January 15, 2007. "I’ve got a bionic heart now," joked by Buendia.
This event prompted rap artist Francis Magalona, a longtime friend of Buendia and the other Eraserheads, to state the following in his personal blogsite: "Fast forward to right now, 9:58 am, Jan. 9, a lot of what ifs scenarios pop in my head. What if the E-heads members are back, like long-lost blood brothers? What if "the most significant OPM band of Pinoy Rock" would be in one room, what would happen?" And in postscript he adds, "Para sa akin panahon na para mag-reunite ang E-heads. Sugod na mga kapatid...rock & roll na hanggang umaga." which roughly translates, "For me, it's time for E-Heads to reunite. Let's go brothers...rock & roll until the morning comes."
Ely’s first on-stage public appearance after his heart attack was on Saturday, February 10, 2007 as his band, Pupil, performed at The Music Hall in SM Mall of Asia, in an Animax event called “Love Is In The Air”. The event featured a Speed-dating event as a welcome celebration for Valentine’s Day and live performances from other local artists such as Callalily, and Amber. Pupil is also part of “Super Proxy Jam”. It is an event that is hoping to spread awareness for the importance of Cardiovascular Health and for the benefit of The Heartist Foundation Inc. Francis Magalona & The Hardware Sydrome, Parokya Ni Edgar, Gloc-9, Dicta License, PiKaSO, and Dice & Mobbstar are also participants in the said event. Heartist Foundation Inc. is another collaborative effort between Ely Buendia and Francis Magalona that aims to help Filipino artists with health problems.

[edit] Eraserheads Reunion

Buendia joined Marasigan, Adoro, and Zabala for a one-night only reunion show on August 30, 2008 at the Fort Open Field, Taguig City. The concert, however, was cut short after Ely collapsed due to emotional stress[6]. They were already halfway of a planned 30-song setlist as Ely reportedly collapsed backstage during a break and was rushed to the Makati Medical Center. He was, however, reported to be in stable condition. Buddy had checked on Ely in his tent right after they went to their planned 20 minute break and saw that he already was on an oxygen mask with paramedics checking his blood pressure. As he left and came back, paramedics were already taking Ely on an ambulance. Bandmates Buddy, Raimund and Marcus further said that they had no idea that Ely was already having difficulty performing[7].
Results showed that Buendia suffered from a slight attack and Hypokalemia. The doctors at Philippine Heart Center had found another blocked artery and performed angioplasty right away, which is Ely's third since 2007. On September 5, 2008, Buendia was discharged from the hospital.

[edit] TV and Films

  • Aside from starring with the Eraserheads in the movie "Run Barbi Run", Ely played a cameo role in Rufa Mae Quinto’s movie entitled, “Masikip Sa Dibdib” where he was playing and singing “Keeper” by The Mongols in a live stage set with audiences going wild and enjoying the music.

Ely graced the opening rites for Dekada Cinemanila on October 16, 2008. The event also marked Ely's comeback in the industry after his operation.
  • A 13-minute indie film entitled "Waiting Shed" was produced by Cinemanila's Anima and Tikoy Aguiluz and was shown as part of Cinemanila's Sine Barangay. The film was directed by Ely Buendia, making it his first. "Waiting Shed" premiered with Marcus Adoro's indie film "The Artist Is In".
  • He guested as "Dave", the older brother of Chris Brawner, in Manny Pacquiao's comedy sitcom, "Show Me Da Manny". In the later part of the show, Buendia performed "Different Worlds" with his band Pupil. The episode was aired on September 13, 2009.

[edit] Socio-Civic

  • Ely also served as the Master Councilor of the Philippines branch of Order of DeMolay .[citation needed] He was initiated as one of the Charter Members of A. Mabini Chapter at Parañaque and has received the Degree of Chevalier, the highest Degree in DeMolay.[citation needed] DeMolay alumni members include Walt Disney, John Wayne, Mel Blanc, Bob Mathias, Bill Clinton, Menardo Jimenez, Neptali Gonzales II, Suharto T. Mangudadatu, Jejomar Binay, Ariel Magcalas, Rafael Salas, Joel Lamangan, Luke Mejares and Mike Orquillas. Each has spoken eloquently of the life-changing benefit gained from their involvement in DeMolay.[8]
  • Ely Buendia and Francis Magalona started the Heartist Foundation Inc., which aims to help Filipino artists with health problems and other concerns.

[edit] Solo Projects

  • Buendia had a solo project, even before leaving the Eraserheads. He recorded ten tracks in his home studio, "Suite 16 Studios." The album was called "Wanted: Bedspacer," and it comprised the tracks "Wanted Bedspacer," "Monday Mundane," "Kakaiba," "Santo," "Over 18," "Tapos Na," "Acid Tongue," "Oras," "Shallow Breathing," and "Hotchik". The cassette version of the album has a bonus track titled "In the Midnight".
  • In mid-2008, Buendia commenced a series of solo gigs. He mostly sang Eraserheads songs accompanied by indie bands or sessionists, without his band Pupil. First he had a local performance with the Oven Toaster band in the Mag:net Cafe, the Fort. Then he performed an all-Eraserheads number in Manning Bar, Sydney, Australia [9]. Apparently, most fans have been intrigued by these events as there were no issued press releases or announcements regarding his recent solo performances. He also made a new version of "Ang Huling El Bimbo" with FILharmoniKa orchestra for Kumpas compilation, headed by Gerard Salonga, brother of Lea Salonga.
  • Ely Buendia and his sister, Lally Buendia wrote the songs “Black Whole," “Sucker” and “Marble” for Domino's Fair Tales album. His wife, Diane played Glockenspiel on “In Your Arms and Pedalpitch on “Provocatrice”. Fair Tales was co-produced by Ely (together with his sister), and was mixed by him as well (together with Lazyboy). Domino was fronted by Lally Buendia and the album was released commercially under Viva Records in 2003. Domino is Lally Buendia on vocals, Ryan Goan on guitars/keyboards, Noy Herrera on bass and Gideon Trinidad on drums
  • He composed True Faith’s “Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw” with Lyrics by J. Bacasmas and arranged by Ron Soriano for PolyEast Records. Bacasmas is the vocals behind Ultraelectromagneticpop's “Ganjazz.”
  • "Magasin" which he wrote was sampled for the track “Girl On Da Magazin” by Legendary Flip-Hop group, Legit Misfitz.
  • He wrote the songs “Mga Babae” and "Something Always Brings Me Back To You" sung by the female funk, R&B, rap, and soul music group, Novia under BMG Pilipinas.
  • Buendia wrote a song called "Stone's Throw" for Sponge Cola's debut album "Palabas".
  • He also collaborated with Pinoy Rap artists in the song “Private Diane” with Francis Magalona and Death Threat. It was released under Sony Music. Buendia furthered the collaboration with rapper Beware (also of Death Threat) titled "Pag Puti ng Uwak", under the album "Revenge of tha Undaground", which was released in 2007.
  • He used the codename “MH Hesus” when he sung back-up vocals for Parokya Ni Edgar’s “Hosanna Ngayong Pasko” Christmas song in the “Jingle Balls Silent Night Holy Cow” album. MH actually means Maalalahanin, it is the street somewhere in Teachers Village, Quezon City where Ely Buendia used to live.
  • Buendia also collaborated with the late Francis Magalona for their new album, "In Love & War" originally released in 2009, and launched a new album last June 2010, with their hit single, "Higante".

[edit] Commercial Projects

  • As early as January 2006, there were reports that some of Pupil’s fans have been hearing a new song called “Luk4 Jingle”, as it was played on some radio stations and also during the ending credits video of the original episodes of Studio 23’s Barkada Trip. Although due to lack of indications and confirmations from the band and related organizers that time, it was quite unclear if the song was actually from the band or was an old solo project of Ely or the vocals of the said song just sounded like Ely. Until recently, the song was finally confirmed, heard and witnessed when the band played it (titled "Text LUK4") live during the finale of DPC Yellow Pages' "Luk4 The Million - City Adventure Challenge" held on December 8, 2006 at the Metrowalk. Although Pupil plays it during live performances, the song itself was a side project of Ely's.
  • Ely Buendia was included in a commercial project for San Miguel Beer's Red Nose product line, alongside various Filipino Rock icons: Ebenezer from Pencil, Ronnhel from Pencil,Erwin from Pencil, Morris from Pencil and Noli from the Pencil. He also became a top endorser of the Red Nose Muziklaban. During the 2007 Muziklaban, he performed "Nasaan Ka?" with Kjwan as his ad hoc band.
  • Buendia is part of Coca-Cola Philippine's Coke Zero campaign with Billy Crawford and Gaby Dela Merced. The campaign was launched on ASAP and is generally about the health awareness of the brand. He also participated in a similar but more formal campaign in 2008 with Quaker Oats.
