STILL SMOKIN' The band Wolfgang is back with a metallic blast. "Midway through a blistering set at the Music Musuem, Basti Artadi told the audience, "This is hallowed ground, man! It's good to be back and tang'na, as always, you're such a great audience." "Basti is the vocalist and chief songwriter of Wolfgang, the once and future kings of Philippine new metal...It's a sight to see Artadi standing transfixed before the mic in Jesus pose, arms stretched out with forefingers pointed skyward. The crowd responds in kind, a slightly bent finger arced toward the stage while singing the lyrics to every song the band has ever recorded. "Then there's Artadi's crack cohorts with guitarist Manuel Legarda, bassist Mon Legaspi, and drummer Francis Aquino. Each of them show expert chops that draw out the metal monster from their loud fast numbers. In concert, even their ballads teeter on the brink of controlled mayhem. "Although the band has been absent from the scene for the past six years, it's like they never left. Nobody has challenged their unique place in the Pinoy metal pantheon and their new sound is as ferocious and death-defying as anything from their first release in 1995. "Villains was recorded in three cities. Yet the distance, compressed to milliseconds of interaction via the Internet, has not dimmed the original fire that forged their contemporary brand of heavy metal. "At Music Museum, the band uncorked their best hits laced with songs from the new album. They even treated the raving audience with acoustic performances after a fusillade of ear-bending noise and one country-inflected number which left no doubt as to who still rules the nation's heavy metal roost. "Old warhorses 'Sanctified', 'Atomica' and 'Beast' are brothers-in-arms of the more recent 'John of the Cross' and 'R.P. Deathsquad.' Past favorites like 'Natutulog Kong Mundo' and 'Halik ni Hudas' (both written by Legaspi) are as potent quiet storms as the new 'Kung Gusto Mo Pa' (penned by Artadi.) Wolfgang's latest concerts prove they still pack the firepower to sustain a legendary stay at the top of the Pinoy metal heap. "The Wolves are back in town and they're having the time of their interrupted lives under the limelight." And audiences are roaring back in approval, especially with the band's latest masterpiece VILLAINS. They've still got it -- the know-how to scare the bejesus out of audiences with their devilishly fun brand of heavy metal... and the ability to get their legions of fans to bang their heads..." PULP MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2009 +++++++ CRY HAVOC.... THE SONS OF ANARCHY ARE BACK. Yes, WOLFGANG has returned. Crank up the volume, let the headbangers' ball begin, for it is sweet indeed to hear the wolves once again pounding on the door. And what better way to celebrate their homecoming than with the sixth and newest LP, VILLAINS, in their discography. We cannot overstate the importance of WOLFGANG to Pinoy heavy metal music. In an industry and scene that has musicians trying to to toe the line, balancing technical artistry, creative originality, stage chops and charisma, WOLFGANG has it all. When they first sent a demo of their two original songs "DARKNESS FELL" and "LEFT ALONE" to local radio stations... requests and critical response flooded in... All of a sudden, the bar of excellence was raised. All of a sudden, it looked like Pinoy heavy metal could cross over to the mainstream. Almost technically flawless, with intense and compelling shows and songs, that alternate between doom and delicacy, WOLFGANG brings an onslaught to local ears that took the cue from heavy metal purveyors Metallica, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, and Pantera, combining inventive riffs with melodic complexities.. but firmly rooted in the blues and original fire of classic rock. WOLFGANG would become rock stars who would accomplish many things and be considered a creative juggernaut that not only crafted songs of aggression and beauty, but could also shred the pants of anyone else on-stage. They were amiable rock stars, yes, led by Artadi's metalhead-of-the-masses magnetism, but they were also revered and looked up to as saints and avatars forged in black nativity. Five studio albums and a number of side projects like Brain Salad (basically Artadi and some Razorback members), WOLFGANG would consolidate a following that was not so much a fan base but a devotional congregation that hailed their albums almost as Bibilical verse and psalm to commit sonic crime by. The WOLFGANG reunions in 2007 proved one thing to the members: they still had the magic. "Once Manuel (Legarda) asked me if I wanted to do a new song for the 'Alive' (reunion concert)," says Artadi, "and once I heard the music, all the heaviness I felt regarding music vanished and it became fun again. All this was magnified after the concert as well." WOLFGANG played (the freshly written) RP DEATHSQUAD, an all new song they had written by passing tracks via the internet -- a technique that was used heavily in the completion of the new album, VILLAINS. ---KARL R. DE MESA FUDGE MAGAZINE, DEC 2008 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When it comes to playing loud, hard and fast, few bands have been able to match the sheer ferocity and onstage charisma of WOLFGANG.... In the 1990's, a bunch of dudes with waist-length hair from La Salle, classic rock and thrash metal fans all, decided to form themselves into a band. They started hanging out with friends who had begun to establish themselves as a classic rock-oriented band called Razorback, who dubbed them the Wolfpack, which later evolved into WOLFGANG. After a few months of playing covers, WOLFGANG released their eponymous debut album. Original songs such as "Darkness Fell", "Halik ni Hudas" and "Natutulog Kong Mundo", whose brooding lyrics were mostly penned by frontman Artadi and propelled by machine-gun riffs by Legarda, became instant mosh pit classics. The band also walked off with most of the major music awards of the day. The WOLFGANG cult grew exponentially when they were snapped up by a major label. Their second album "Semenelin" was released internationally in both the United States and Japan, their label believing that WOLFGANG was the Filipino band most likely to break overseas. Their succeeding releases "Wurm" and "Serve in Silence" cemented their fanbase. They continued to reap critical praise and music awards with each release. They released a 'valedictory', the double CD "Black Mantra", with nearly all the members leaving for abroad soon after. Strangely enough, it was as if they never left. Thanks largely to the internet, they managed to stay in touch with their fanbase. Their 2007 reunion gig with Razorback proved to be a watershed, demonstrating that WOLFGANG's audience is still here, impetus enough for the release of their sixth studio album, after a 6-year hiatus, entitled "Villains." -- ERIC CARUNCHO, SUNDAY INQUIRER MAGAZINE December 7, 2008
